The greatest territory in the time of the territories was the CWA in Memphis. Throughout its history, it covered the metropolitan areas of Memphis, Louisville and Evansville, IN. It was run and owned by Jerry Jarrett out of Hendersonville, TN.
Jerry Jarrett began Continental Wrestling Association in 1977. An accomplished wrestler in NWA Mid-America (1940s-1981). Jarrett broke off part of the promotion over disputes with promoter Nick Gulas’ push of his son George, who apparently was not very talented in the ring. Gulas eventually sold NWA Mid-America to Jarrett. It is interesting that CWA’s end as a separate entity in 1989 comes with its merger with Fritz Von Erich’s World Class Championship Wrestling (1966-90). Fritz was known for pushing his sons as the top talent in the territory. More on that later.
Jarrett would go on to have a great run for almost thirty years. He purchased WCCW from Fritz von Erich in 1989 to expand those territories into the United States Wrestling Association, an attempt to compete with the WWF and WCW on a national level. Unfortunately, declining attendance at the Mid-South Coliseum forced Jarrett to sell his share of USWA to Jerry Lawler in 1995. Everything continued to descend over the two years with Lawler as primary owner.
Memphis Wrestling was centered around Memphis. The promotion went by several names, but we will try to avoid confusion by just referring to it as “Memphis Wrestling.” The promoters were Eddie Marlin and his son-in-law, Jerry Jarrett. The biggest mainstay for Memphis Wrestling was Jerry Lawler, who would later become part-owner when it was a developmental league for the WWF.
