Daily Walk in the Catechism

359. Do the bread and wine merely symbolize the body and blood of Christ?

No. Although this is the teaching of many Protestant churches, Jesus' own words clearly identify the bread as His body and the wine as His blood. We takes Jesus' words--"This is My body ... My blood"--to mean what they say (see Questions 350 and 353).

1 Corinthians 11:24-25 And when He had given thanks, He broke it, and said, “This is My body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of Me.” In the same way also He took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”
