Mid-South Wrestling Association was based out of New Orleans and Oklahoma City. The promoter was Bill Watts. The head matchmaker was Grizzly Smith.

Mid-South held the prestigious honor of being one of the great truly independent wrestling promotions. While Watts had a couple ties with the NWA, he had enough clout with the wrestlers that the talented ones would flock to New Orleans and Oklahoma City to work for him.

Mid-South Wrestling lasted from 1979 until 1987, when it was bought out by Jim Crockett Productions in what would become World Championship Wrestling. In 1986, it was renamed the Universal Wrestling Federation.
